Site investigations exposed the opportunity to develop a high use public transport node, the ferry terminal to be developed will be extended from the following:

-multiple boarding platforms

-interesting spatial experience

-relationship with existing tectonics

-continuation of existing ferry terminal archetype

-flexibility in response to tidal, solar and usage intensity variations

-long term/short term

The idea of a building which can distort its form and geometry: I have distilled this idea further, into the concept of modular units which rearrange and generate forms.

- this exemplar exhibits a formal and structural architectural typology which is simplistic through its refined composition. Matrix + grid patterns transformed by contextual parameters often direct and provide opportunities to the Bjarke Ingels Group.

Architecture is the response to the contemporary socio-cultural model; an adaptation of the past, integration of the present, and prediction of the future.

1. We do not walk around in the costume of Louis XIV - Otto Wagner. Architecture is the development to a refined model, rather than a regurgitation of the past.
2. Contextual parameters need to inspire contextually responsive architecture.
3. Preserving the integrity of the historical context produces opportunities of which inform design decisions.
4. Predictions of the architectures function in the future are integrated into the design, with emphasis on the ability to transform, move, interact and adapt to changes in the social, built and environmental fabric.

CONTEXTUAL CRITERION

- Respond to contextual, geographical and digital issues identified in Project01A

- Develop an understanding on alternative contextual opportunities and parameters.

• Materials, tectonics, forms, structures and the culture of the existing urban fabric are enhanced and extended into the design and development of a built environment
• Proposal responds to the opportunity to expand the proximity, type and quantity of venues accessible via public transport, river and bicycle/foot.

DEVELOPMENT CRITERION

- Establish parameters in response to site analysis and investigations to allow a refined architectural resolution.

• Flexible Architecture: the architecture is adaptable, transformable, mobile and interactive.
• Conscious Architecture: the architecture intuitively and automatically adapts to change.

The architectural composition residential, commercial and entertainment venues, should respond individually and compositely to the dynamic conditions of the Howard Smith Wharves context.

"CHANGING THE SCALE CHANGES THE ATMOSPHERE" - Junya Ishigami.

Similar to the ideas of enhancing the scale and atmosphere of the site used in conceiving the folie; scale can be highly influential the final composition of a design through its application to varying spaces.

In terms of icon: my intent is to configure my development around the iconic figure which is the Story Bridge, this will become an integral component of my design through its contextual, structural and historical relevance. I intend to not only respond, but utilise its existence.

Through an extended site analysis, the opportunities of the macro and micro context have been established and will form the quintessential elements in determining the fundamental composition of the Howard Smith Wharves development concept. To imagine and design a response to these contextual elements, further parameters have and will be integrated into the proposal to allow a refined concept to emerge, enhancing the essence of the historical, contemporary and future place.

1. The ideas from the initial response to the site from which I developed the folie will be reinterpreted with regards to commercial, residential, entertainment and movement oriented architecture. The concept of private and enclosed as opposed to public and exposed, and the interchange between the two as a generator of ideas. During the day, the existence of the development will decrease enhancing the existing natural forms and features, whereas at night the architecture will produce a synergy of seamless integration into the site as well as the sense of attraction.
2. Flexibility: an architecture which is adaptable, transformable, mobile and interactive: intuitively or manually reconfigured in response to current dynamic influences or requirements. Permanence is established through a dynamic existence and socio-cultural contribution. This will form the basis for another set of parameters to establish a concept on - it is my understanding, adaptation and extension of the ideas expressed by Robert Kronenburg in his book Flexible: Architecture that Responds to Change:

Exemplars

To enhance the experience of the Howard Smith Wharf Site through architectural development, i have began analysing the wider and more detailed context in terms of socio-cultural interaction.

To develop an architectural resolution which embraces the opportunities of the site and wider city life, while responding to existing, proposed and possible future functions; I have used exemplar designs and ideas to direct those of my own.

Architecture Exemplar:

- the interpretation of existing urban forms as a design generator.

- Reintroduction of aged architecture into the contemporary built environment without introducing foreign typologies.

Text Exemplar:

- the book is based on a theme of architecture which is responsive to the dynamic conditions it is placed within; the idea of 'flexibility'.
